List members Hugh Enox, Cecile & Baron Corpuz and Greg Parker all have Malthauser pads or did recently. I think Sheldon does also. I have gotten the ones to fit Weinmann from both Hugh and Cecile recently. Also got one set of the Mafac style from Hugh. Don't know if Hugh still has the Mafac ones or if the others do.

I agree there is nothing wrong with Weinmann brakes, except that after 30 years the original pads can be hard as rock. Weinmann pads seem to harden even worse than most with age. I had a rock-hard set like that on the Weinmann Symmterics on my recently acquired 1974 Raleigh Super Tourer. Installed a pair of the Malthausers and now the brakes stop just fine. Same result with Malthauser pads in the Weinmann 500's on my 1972 Follis model 172

The problem probably are not the brakes, which offer more stopping power than most from the era (if they are the commonly used 666/999 model), but the pads. Modern mtb pads fit fine. I prefer Matthauser pads. Does anybody know of a source for the slip-in Matthauser pads that fit into Mafac pad holders for centerpull brakes? -- Jan Heine Editor/Publisher Vintage Bicycle Quarterly c/o Il Vecchio Bicycles 140 Lakeside Ave, Ste.
