One even nastier question just occurred to me is: Which front changers would have handled the great size diversity of the randonneur style double front chainrings?

My understanding is that most all of the lever shifters well into the late 50s only comfortable allowed, at most, a difference of maybe half a dozen teeth between the two front chainrings. And the Campagnolo Grand Sport cable operated shifter was certainly used only for narrow range racing-gear applications.

And, remember, these TA rings were intended as "production" components - not just for use by a handful of Constructeurs who could always just fashion their own unique mechanisms to suit.

Sadly, my knowledge of 40s-50s derailleurs is very limited.
