I'm going to assume it was a worn, used, mechanism, as I'd done this same ninth to first downshift every day for the past month, as well as smaller downward jumps into first while on the road during that time with no problem. If anything, the FD was being a difficult to adjust PITA, but the rear was working just fine. And, it's been on the bench repeatedly in that time trying to get the setup to work as well as my Campy Gran Sport (yes, I enjoy frustrating projects, why do you think I was willing to take a second shot at marriage?).

Well, the bike will be sitting for at last the weekend, while I badger the doc on how soon I can get back on two wheels - both bicycle and motorcycle. Automatic transmission SUV's just don't do it for me.
