Mike wrote about Barum tubulars:

"If I remember, a good friend "in the day" bought a bunch of Barum's and was extremely pleased - he was used to vittoria cx and cg's and he loved them. Not much later, though, they seemed very hard to get. And in the early 90's I aquired them for sale when I owned Bicycle Classics Inc. The ones I got were horrible - not straight, scary base tapes - sold them out with some scary disclaimers and advice that they might be best used as a spare.

My guess is that at one point some emerged that were really great - but the good ones were available for just a short while and as Steven said they were pretty bad otherwise."

Perhaps I should have pointed out that I was talking about Barum tubulars in the 70's and early 80's, when the Iron Curtain was still firmly in place. At the time, the Barum tubulars were standard trade bait for all Eastern European racers who were able to leave the Eastern Bloc to race in the West. In Canada, not being quite as phobic of everything from Eastern Europe at the time, the availability was reasonable and it was commonplace to have American racers bring home large quantities for their own personal use and resale. They were as I mentioned earlier great value for money, acceptable quality (especially for training) and the tightest fit of any tire available. Sounds pretty close to the description of Tufo tires today.
