The image is faded and damaged, but there's still lots to look at in this pic from the 1932 Critérium des As at Longchamp. Here we see George Wambst pacing behind "one of his favorite tandems":

In the days before the "As" was/were paced by dernies, each competitor had a group of tandems manned by their most powerful friends. Each tandem would make pace for a few laps, then the rider would switch over to a fresh tandem. Winner in 1930, Wambst would go on to finish 2nd in 1932 behind "espoir" Ernest Terreau.
