Subject: [CR]a Raleigh rebuild

I was on a local public ride, and a group of us chose to take the shorter 12.5 mile route in support of a single mother friend who's son was riding a child's bike (way sub BMX) for the entire distance without complaint. He is a big boy, outweighs me but much smaller in height. We passed a house that had 3 bikes for sale, 10.00 US, one of which was a small on topic Raleigh Record. Brandy (who Mike Schmidt met at the velodrome) and I shot back and bought the Record to clean up and give to

the 11 year old for his first 'big' bike. Well, stripped it all down, cleaned up all the components, repacked the bearings, touched up the paint, and am ready to put it together and have

a couple of questions. It has those diabolical brake assists that I remember removing as a mechanic but cannot remember what I did with the bolt and the space. I am recalling replacing the cylindar with a short one, and I can machine a new one, or I can machine a spacer to put in there. Weinmann Vanquier

centerpulls btw. Also, it has those stem shifters. Instinctually, I would remove them and put in downtube shifters, but Rita advises that he has no experience

with gears so it is something to do after he gets some experience. I will admit that they polished up and look pristine (huret allvit).

What do you all think?
