Subject: [CR]Janic frame

Hi Mark, Nice looking Janic frame. I had a few of these come through my shop(s) in the Salt Lake area in the early and mid nineties. Owned one myself for a time. They were always well done and finished nicely. Your info is correct that Steve Dorris was the builder, although something (poor memory, perhaps?) tells me that he wasn't the originator of the name on the frame. Maybe he took over for a builder named Janic(?) I did hear a few years ago that Steve had actually moved to Salt Lake, but had hung em up, as they say, and an acquaintance of mine at the time actually purchased his frame tools, cutters and so forth. There's a chance that that is non fact, but it's what this acquaintance told me. I was told that SD was retiring and selling off frame jigs, table, welding equipment etc. The phone number I was given, as I was eager to chase down anything that was up for grabs at the time, never got an answer, and I finally dropped the chase. Hopefully someone out there can confirm or dispel that info, but that's how it came to me, probably five or six years ago. I had a very nice and sweet riding crimson Janic, with steel fork that was a beaut! It resides on the list of bikes I would buy back if it came my way again. Another interesting note: I had a shop in Orem, Utah, which is minutes from Sundance ski resort, home to the actor Robert Redford. Our shop serviced "Bob's" custom steel MTB, which was painted with a southwestern theme and no decals, but did have the initials "SD", followed by "Durango, Colorado". I always assumed it was built by Dorris.
