Garth,

It seems rather unlikely that Gios serial numbers (or anyone el se's serial numbers) would coincidentally correspond exactly to the serial number convention that was used by Raleigh, and that the frame/fork would h appen to bear far more resemblance to a 1980 Raleigh model, than it does to a Gios - and also considering it is not the traditional shade of blue that Gios is so well known for.

In fact, it seems far more likely that the frame actually is a Raleigh than a Gios, ironically making what on the sur face might seem like an incongruous comparison, actually rather pertinent.

If you go to the Ebay site and look up the Gios frameset you will be invited to cl ink on the Sheldon Brown link which the seller has put there with the st ated purpose of helping you determine the year of manufacture. The link that he posted brings you to a Sheldon Brown site alright. But it is the site which helps one determine the date of a Raliegh! Using the informa tion of the serial number there we can determine that the bike is a 1980 ! However, this serial number is for Ralieghs not Gioses! Using the same link I have determined that my MP3 player is an 1983 and my cordless te lephone is a 50's model! At this same site it mentions that Carlton Rali eghs are made with Reynolds tubing. I guess my MP3 player is also made f rom Reynolds too. The seller also states that the Gios has Italian threa ding, however nowhere on Sheldon's site does it state that any Ralieghs are made with Italian threading. In order to determine that, the seller presumably would have had to try to thread in an Italian bottom bracket. This requires actual logical thought, but if he used a Raliegh serial c ode breaker to determine a Gios frameset age, I have to assume his abili ty to think logically is very limited. Pardon me now as I determine if m y MP3 player is Italian threaded.
