There were many makes and styles of cycling shoe available. My 1938 Holdsworth "Aids to Happy Cycling" catalogue (later re-named "Bike Riders' Aids") lists 15 different styles, from the heavy duty "Rough Stuff" to the ultra light "Flexi-Sprint", availble with either zip or lace up front, and weighing only 12 ounces per pair.

The term used for the long socks is, indeed, stockings.
