Difficult to rely on the dust caps, since they are easily replaced. One really can't distinguish cleanly between the NR and SR "eras", since most or all Nuovo Record (or some more properly just Record) parts continued to be produced after corresponding SR parts were introduced. I believe there were still NR/Record parts being sold up until the SR/NR/Record line was discontinued in 1986 or 1987.
According to the timeline provided by our illustrious Mr. Schmidt, the first NR parts appeared in catalogs in 1967. The pedals with black alloy cages, called Superleggero, or SL, appeared in 1971, the first SR parts in 1974. If your pedals have titanium axles, they are SR, if steel axles they are SL. Interesting (and annoying) fact - the SR pedals used a different bearing size and therefore different bearing cups than SL, even though the bodies seem otherwise identical. Thus you can't replace a trashed body on an SR pedal with a much easier to find SL body. In the mid-70's to mid-80's a lot of bikes, at least in the US, were sold with "Super Record reduced" groups. This usually meant all SR except for SL pedals in place of SR, NR BB (steel axle) in place of SR (Ti axle) and the hubs, I believe, were properly called just Record. Super Record hubs with Ti spindles had been announced early in SR production, but evidently had problems and were never distributed.
