Mafac Racers may have been ubiquitous on French team bikes in the sixties but they are perhaps remembered for the one rider who abandoned the trusty Mafac. When the appalling accident occured to Roger Riviere in the 1960 Tour on the descent of the Col de Perjuret his Geminiani bicycle was fitted with side-pull brakes. In a monumental show of bad taste the English importer of Mafac and other French equipment placed advertisments pointing this out and implying that had Riviere stuck with Mafac all would have been well. Although the ad. didn't name the brakes used I believe they were Balilla Ray Green Brighton England
