Actually, I believe those are the RD 500 hubs, predecessor to the 501 model. Not much different really, but the first of that line. Interestingly, the set of wheels that were on my RIH had Mavic hubs that I believe were predecessor to the RD500s. They have "MAVIC" in block letters across the hub body, rather than the little cast-in oval seen here and common on the 500/501/520/etc.:

Don't have pix of the block-letter hubs at the moment. In fact, they are floating around Brian's shop somewhere right now.
Anyone know more about those and where they fit in the chronology of Mavic hubs? Not much on Mavic's web site.

These look to be standard Mavic 501 hubs. They are sealed. I don't think you can shift the axle. You can replace the axle with different sizes, but I think it's fixed left to right by design.
