I am somewhat puzzled as to why you could not simply use a longer limit screw if needed ?
I know it might be embarrassing to admit, but are you sure you are using the proper adjuster screw for what you are trying to limit ? I.E. could you accidently be trying to set the low-gear limit with the high-gear limit screw ? These kinds of mistakes are not uncommon - especially amongst engineers, physicists, and lawyers.
P.S. - from the sounds of it, I HIGHLY recommend installing a pie-plate spoke guard !
