Can't help with the smallest chainring size but I'd just like to defend the 47x50 chainring set up. With a 14 to 24 block you get even spaced gears from 96 to 52. Wouldn't be much use to me now but for racing and training it was fine. When the campag chainset was introduced the usual rings were 45x52 ( a clubmate brought them back from Barale's of Bordighera and that was all Barale stocked). Unless you can handle straight through gears with a bottom of 64in I just can't see how you can make it work with a five block. Of course the 42x52 with a six block was great but that was later.
