Dare I suggest: check the "specs"! Before you all go running to the door, spec sheets on cycles can give a good indication of what was... well "hot" at the time. So if you look at the Raleigh 1974 Team Professional, it ha d 36-spoke wheels. By the next year it had 32. From what some have alrea dy contributed from their personal experience, this jibes with the mid-70s as
being the approx. switch over. Today 36-hole rims are considered quain t enough that when I dropped off my Super Champions to be laced, one of the bike shop lads (born way after these were made) said "wow, what a lot of holes!". Indeed.
