Bars - nittos I put on because they were what I had around when I got the bike Stem - currently has very short Atax (for previous owner) but I also have the original Peugeot stem that he had saved, and I will of course sell it with the bike Shifters - I think retrofrictions would be correct, but I didn't have any, so I used the mid-range Simplex levers you see in the pics (they were NOS when I put them on). Note these are NOT delrin levers, they are metal with plastic covers that have the Simplex "S" on them. Brake Levers - I had a used set of the Mafac levers that would have come on the bike originally, so I put them on Rear Rim - the original Super Champion Competition came with the bike, but had a bad dent in the rim, so I chose to have the wheel rebuilt with a Record tubular rim (red circle with green triangles logo - that's Nisi, right?). I will include the original rim with the bike - it's possible that someone who is knowledgeable could repair it. There's a pic of the rim in the album I linked above, and you can see the dent to the right of the Super Champion sticker in the pic. Tires - rear is a Clement Strada (tubular, of course) with a messy glue job, and the front is a Vittoria Competition Rally (tubular) w/ Kevlar belt. Both tires hold air well, and have at least a few hundred miles left in them. Crankset - the original owner had the cranks swapped out for a Stronglight triple - I don't know the model name, I'm sure some of you will.
So what, you ask, IS original? Original frame and fork w/ original paint and decals. Serial number plate is missing from the bb shell (rivets are still there). Chrome on forks and stays is cloudy in places - I don't know enough about chrome to know if it will polish up or not. Paint has some significant chips, some of which are touched up, others not. Worst area is on drive side of head tube (one spot the size of a quarter, another the size of a nickel), which I tried to show in the pics. All decals are there and in good to excellent shape. Including the cool french Reynolds decal. The frame decal is on the down tube, not the seat tube. Original Stronglight Competition headset. I believe the bb is original, but have not had the cranks off or pulled the bb. Beautiful original Simplex badged seatpost (didn't show up well in the pics) Original Cinelli Unicanitor in very good shape Original Simplex front and rear derailleurs that shift well Original Mafac Competition centerpull calipers w/ original Mafac cable saddles and Mafac centerpull rear seatpost bolt hanger Original Peugeot badged stem (although it's not currently mounted). It needs a good polish. Original Maillard 700 "team issue" hubs Front rim is original Super Champion Competition - I'm reasonably certain it's the original lacing. Original Simplex top tube brake cable clamps Original Lyotard mod 136 pedals (no toe clips) - the original owner removed the ubiquitous reflectors. Original Simplex downtube clamp on derailleur cables guide Sticker on seat tube from original bike shop reads "Roberts Cycle Co. 'The House of Fine Bicycles' 7053 N. Clark St. Chicago. Guaranteed Service All Makes BR 4-9281" Original black plastic plug inside bottom of steerer tube ;-)
Since I have owned this bike, I've only put about 50 miles on it. But it's definitely not a show bike. Makes a very nice rider. I would recommend that before the new owner rides it, he or she repacks the bb and headset and gives the frame/forks a good wash. Let me repeat that: this bike is dirty, and needs a good cleaning. There is no evidence of rust anywhere on the bike. The chain should also be replaced - it has a stiff link that clicks every once in a while.
I am asking $275 plus shipping. I would prefer not to ship. But I would be happy to meet the buyer in Baltimore, Philly, or DC. Or I could bring the bike to the Westminster, MD swap on 2/5.
