I haven't been following the whole thread, but have this to offer. I have a set of Osgear dropouts, that do have a vertical slot, and behind that a horizontal slot. The vertical was to position the wheel in the proper place when using the Osgear Super Champion derailleur set up, and the horizontal was for fixed gear riding.There is a picture in The Dancing Chain of a similar dropout on page 121. The drop outs I have have an added finger that points down, that helps guide the wheel up into the vertical position. That finger is missing in the photo.
