Thanks, Joel, for the photo link of various 49D versions. And thank you Steven and Chuck (and Jan and Mike again) for your info. Below is a link to the oval on my 49Ds------(I'm using a new photo hosting service so I hope the link works)-----
Mine of course most looks like the third example from the top in Joel's photos, but in mine the S is wider and the top crest of the G is more angular and does not curve back in toward the opening of the letter in the same way that the Joel's does.
Probably just another tooling/stamping/casting variation, unless anyone has any clue.
