Very useful on steel or steel barrelled hubs as they kept what is a fairly inaccessable part of the bicycle clean of dirt and corrosion(rust). Particulary common on utility bikes, although I have made up lightweight leather 'shoelace' hub cleaners for Simplex and various British Hub Co hubs over the years for "club" type lightweights.
