Well, what would be the point of them anyway? The central
barrel of the hub is the one part of your wheel that's easily
cleaned with a rag. And the reflector isn't visible to anyone
other than the cockroaches sitting on the inside of your rim.

\r?\n> They've been used on bikes since before 1900.
\r?\n> Any old thing will do.
\r?\n> I 've often seen old hubs that have had the road grit wear so
\r?\n> much as to go
\r?\n> through the nickel or through the chrome to nickel and copper
\r?\n> to bare steel.
\r?\n> We're takling of of a gazillion revs with sanding down action
\r?\n> Most of the ones were put on by people with stock bikes, and
\r?\n> were sold all
\r?\n> over where bike parts were stocked. Most popular were leather
\r?\n> with
\r?\n> reflectors which tinged when the shiners(s) touched spokes.
\r?\n> Green front, red
\r?\n> back.
\r?\n> Later they were cheap plastic.
\r?\n> many folks just made their own, ie. pipe cleaners,
\r?\n> clothesline, cloth with
\r?\n> weight, leather, you name it.
\r?\n> The oiler impeded turning but the shiner bounced around and
\r?\n> did the job
\r?\n> anyway.
\r?\n> A few racers did it into the '40's maybe but I never saw it
\r?\n> after the late
\r?\n> '40's on any of the racing guys, and only the fewest touring
\r?\n> / sport
\r?\n> riders.
