Subject: [CR]Weinmann Rims --> Wall Thickness of 32/40

When calculating the spoke lengths for the wheelset on my Hobbs I found some interesting things:

32/40 Weinmann 26 x 1 1/4 rims - Aluminum without rivets The rear 40 spoke rim has thicker walls than the front 32 spoke rim (3.0mm vs 2.8mm).

32/40 Bayliss-Wiley Large Flange hubs The spoke hole diameter on the rear hub is bigger than on the front hub (2.4mm vs 2.0mm) The flanges on the rear hub are thicker than the front (3.0 vs 2.8)

It looks as if stronger spokes, more spokes, and stronger rims were used in the rear. Were the rear wheels on British Lightweights over-designed or was there a reason for all that extra strength?

Should I use rim/spoke washers on these wheels? Any spoke recommendations?
