I was introduced to San Marco saddles through my 70s vintage Gitane, so I suspect the Hosteler may have also had a San Marco saddle of one ilk or another ...
My low-end Gitane had a San Marco Coeur (I loved that saddle!) which was about as close to the low-end as San Marco probably made -- it had the ride characteristics of an already broken-in leather saddle, so it was almost perfect.
