Ok, here's what I might do, although i've never done this before ...

1. substitute a SRAM PC-48 chain on the bike, cost $12 2. put generic jockey wheels on the campy derailleur, $5 (plastic, maybe shimano), to avoid having the campy ones get split / cracked / hooked. 3. put a "rider" outer chainwheel on the bike, if in my parts box ... $0 4. put a crankset protective decal to avoid toe-strap rub, $6 (www.vcgraphix.com) 5. if really anal, put MKS dust caps on the pedals, or MKS sylvan pedals. ($10-$25) 6. save the bar tape, hoods, brake pads, put on replacements, $50 (koolstop / cinelli)

Total invested in preserving "the look", upto $83-$98 depending upon what is replaced.

I am surprised that people would swap out the wheels, I do not really understand this part. Is this because used tires are such a dead give-away that a bike is not new ?? Or because the tires would be something very special and impossible to replace ??

I don't have a NOS cinelli SC, but I am restoring some 1970's bikes "as best as possible" although the campy parts are just in VG condition, I was thinking about how to best "preserve" the many hours of work going into these bikes ...
