What the English guy was referring to was "la chasse a la canette" the hunt for water. This was common practice on the pre 1970's Tours. They were not allowed to take bottles from support cars, hence they would grab water and drinks from anywhere which culminated in cafe raids etc. Tom Simpson possibly died from the same symptoms that Brit clubbers die from when they drop ecstasy a combination of dehydration and amphetamines.
