Hmmm. I hate to be a curmudgeon here but I do not see where missing a torque spec would have these outcomes...

I (maybe incorrectly?)infer from your comments that a too tight/too high torque was the assumed problem. But brinelling is a wear factor either coming from the bearing being ricocheted against their races during use, OR, caused by for and aft rocking/flexing of the fork crown (pick your theory) in these cases, torque setting (tightness) is not a factor. It has to do with wear and tear and possibly too loose an initial setting of cup and cone innerface, but torque has little impact, unless grossly too loose and thereby working apart.

Bearing overload also would be a care of maladjustment (to tightly assembled) and the torque settings not necessarily or likely a part of the causal effect....

So I wouldn't worry about torque as much as having an empathy for the job each bearing has to do and getting that "darn snug but not ridiculously tight" feeling practiced... I too, have never heard of exacting tighening specifications, but I think its a question worth asking because I have heard varying instruction on the subject, and Ihave dissasembled Campagnolo where the installer (other than the factory), have obviously not tightened correctly, i/e/brinelling, or bearing overloading.

Thanks BOB, and all who reply,
