I agree with Michael. I set up my old Rickert road machine for some smaller mountain rides when riding easier with my wife. We used to ride to about 7000 feet. I used a NR set up 32x46x50 and a13x22 rear and it shifted fine all the way through with just a little chain sag in the 13x32. So depending on how disciplined you are on cross shifting, you can make it work very nicely, indeed.
