My original Gitane, circa 1970, had a 52/36 crank & 5-speed 14-24 freewheel. I had a push-rod front derailleur ... I don't recall any problems shifting; but, I rarely used the 36t inner.

The rear derailleur was the same as yours ... the only obvious problem that I recall was the cheap pulley wheels.
