FWIW, I intend to "pay forward" and give them away. I was given the two bikes I now have by an ex-rider who got more bang out of having a younger punk show interest in the bikes and a willingness to get them back on the road, than he would have from the strictly monetary payback he'd get Ebaying them. I keep in touch with him, give him updates on the bikes, rides taken, parts dilemmas, feudlets of this forum, etc. and it's an ongoing source of cycling enjoyment for him (even if it's not riding). Even though he gave me license to part out as needed, his outrageously generous gesture turned me into a custodian of the bikes, and I intend to find a similar person when the time comes.
