The RRA fixed side cup does have threads, but the last little bit of the cup is without thread, to stop it going any further in, so it then appears to be threadless. The 2 flats are very shallow, and need a keen edge spanner to grip on them. They are also very brittle and easily crack off, so be careful. It you are unable to get a grip with your spanner try using a ¾” nut and bolt and some washers through the cup to clamp the spanner in position. If that fails, use the nut and bolt with some packing washers to sandwich the flat of the cup. As you tighten the grip of the nut and bolt it will frequently remove the cup. If that doesn’t work, and you are unable to apply any heat to help, don’t bother!

........had a customer call into the shop today with an enquiry about his

newly acquired Raleigh Record Ace believed to be from the early 50's and still

equipped with its original componentry, it appears that when he tried to

dismantle the bottom bracket the right hand fixed cup was nothing like he had

come across before..........protruding from the frame approx. 1/8th" but no

raised flange with the traditional flats on either side just two small

indentations on opposite sides to each other, the question is neither of us have any

idea how to remove the cup as it doesn't appear to have a thread to unscrew so

can any of you more enlightened Raleigh enthusiasts offer any advice? regards Griff King-Spooner (London UK)
