I've got a 42 tooth campy ring here, i really don't kwow what the smallest ring is. and what's the biggest ring 57 or so?

greets,

Arno,

The 42 is a 144 BCD ring and will not fit the 151 BCD arm. I'm really not sure what the smallest 151 BCD ring was, but I always had thought it was 44t. FWIW, the smallest 144 BCD ring is 41t.

But my qustion is this: Is this thousand dollar ring an ordinary 44t 151 BCD ring, or is it some rare, old variant? Even if 44t was/is an ultra-rare size, or if they are simply unobtanium in NOS condition, I still find the bids surprising. My guess, and it is just a guess from someone who knows little about Campy stuff this old, is that the markings, or the tooth profile, or the webbing, or some other aspect of this ring, is not typical Record 151.

Another question I have is what was the "normal" inner on 151 cranks? On 144's it is clear that 42t was by far the most popular. Is there a standard inner for 151 arms (I 'd always thought it was 44t.)

If this ring got the big bucks just because it is an NOS version of the ring that everyone used in the day, but that is NLA in this condition, well, it wouldn't shock me, but I'd be a little surprised. Liekwise if this is an oddball size (analogous to the 41t 144 BCD ring) then the price is still surprising. In my experience, 41t 144s, while far more rare than 42s, don't fetch that much more money because more people are still looking to replicate the old standard than the old exception.

Lotta words... not a lot of ideas....
