I seem to recall that Avocet/Ofmega had an even worse idea in the mid-80's. I'm pretty sure they advertised Avocet Model III hubs, which were to have titanium axles and magnesium shells. Despite a lot of advance advertising, I don't think these were ever released. There may be a few prototypes in existence, though.
