My brother became serious about cycling with a top-of-the-line Favorit, bought right here in Montreal from a shop called Top Sport on Monkland Ave., then owned by a Czech emigre skier who held the world's record as the fastest man on skis.

In the summer he sold bikes, including De Rosa, Colnago and Masi alongside the Favorits he was proud to carry.

My brother went on to a Mercier Service des Courses model and Top Sport (fully staffed by Czech emigre athletes) helped me order my custom-build Macklam from the UK in the fall of 1977.

Those Czech lads were plenty into cycling and the better Favorits were excellent entry-level 10 speeds. I still see the odd one chained to a parking meter around town.
