Water is the closest thing to a universal solvent and it has the advantage of non-toxicity. A great renewable tool is to take a small dowel- roughly pencil size- and sharpen it in a pencil sharpener to a point. It'll get into small areas and effectively remove waxy polishing compounds from the little crevices it tends to stick in. Saliva seems to even work a little better for small projects, should be non-toxic :^)
