It is often reported that Maurice Selbach died when his wheel got caught
on a tram track. What actually happened is that he dropped his front
wheel into the central conduit. All of the former London County Council
Tramways used the central conduit system to pick up their current by use
of a plough and not the
normal overhead system with a trolley pole. Had he been riding high
pressures instead of very thin sprints and tubs it would not have
happened. If you put a thin sprint wheel in the conduit you had no
chance of getting it out. Have enclosed a link so you can see the deep
central conduit slot.If anyone is interested in a Selbach tandem I can
put you in touch with a seller, please contact off list.
