I think you can also go back to De Rosa / Benotto. The frame builders got together with F. Moser when he was racing and built-up the frames out of Columbus tubing with Diamond shape chain stays. Generally thought to stiffen the rear triangle for greater drive and response.
Here is my question why does this seem to be predominately Columbus tubing ( Was Columbus promoting this experimentation ) and not Reynolds or some other manufacturer? Seem curious.
