This may have been mentioned in a message I missed, so I apologize if it's redundant. Rosin core solder can be applied nicely with nothing more than a disposable lighter. Simply heat the cable end for a few seconds, and then "paint" it with the end of the solder. With just a little practice, you can get good coverage, and any extra solder can be swiped off with the thumb and forefinger if you do it quickly. Or, use a shop towel or bit of chamois if you have nerve endings in your digits. Old mechanic's trick.
