I find the AW does OK for what I use it for: rolling terrain. I have a 46 x 20 tooth setup which has worked out pretty well. Works out to uphill, level, and downhill. (46, 61, 81 inches) Sheldon Brown's chart comes in handy for picking the rear cog size. http://sheldonbrown.com/gears/

If there was a way of adding gears without use of a derailleur that'd be interesting. Not sure I'd want a derailleur back there mudding up an otherwise nice clean set up.
