I must have missed those discussions when they first appeared on the list, because I was under the impression that Alpine was a frame builder located in Rockville, Maryland (just outside of DC.) But Ben's frame certainly seems older than any of the Alpine bicycle that I've seen, especially considering that it came with a cottered crankset.
So when did the Maryland built Alpines first appear and when did the split with Georgetown Cycle Sport occur? When that shop became defunct? As for G'town Cycle Sport, it's such a pity that, in the end it was so badly run. In addition to Alpine and all the British bikes sold there, the shop was the largest dealer of Tanguy frames. (Considering that Tanguy was a one man operation, I have the impression that Georgetown Cycle Sport sold a fair number of those bicycles.)
These days, when I ride my bicycle down M Street (at least a couple of times per week), I always feel a bit sad when I pass by the building that once housed Georgetown Cycle Sport. At least I'm consoled that in just a few seconds I pass by Mel Pinto's shop which is still in business... Fred Rednor - Arlington, Virginia, USA (approximately 4 miles from the storefront that once was Georgetown Cycle Sport)
