Gotta agree with the title, although I still find kerosene quite sufficient - the biggest difference for me is that a bowl/dish/pan of gasoline is going to sit outside soaking the parts, while I'll happily leave the same container full of kerosene on the workbench IN the garage.
Long term storage is in a small freestanding building on the other side of the driveway containing all gasoline, kerosene, propane tanks, paint thinner, and five pounds of gunpowder. Life's much safer that way, it's on a non-windowed side of the house, and the top will blow off easily channeling the explosion straight upwards.
To those who find themselves cleaning a lot of salvaged parts, I can't recommend an auto-garage parts cleaner highly enough. Inexpensive, very effective, and usually manages to keep any messy splashing to a minimum.
