David Bilenky cited the above regarding perceived acceleration of "race wheels" vs. heavy (training) ones.

Don't forget that tire outside diameter can effect a noticeable change in gear "size" for a given gear combination.

An inch or more can be lost in the effective ratio with different tires.

Those 220 gram Clement Setas feel lighter as the final drive is shorter.

When one raced with gear limits, and a specific ratio was prescribed you had to evaluate things like that.

Who raced each year with heavier equipment but high profile tires, the heavy rims for insurannce, the high profile tires for ultimate speed. Would have used high pressure 27" clinchers if they existed at the time as the rule book based gear ratios on 27" wheels... who raced on those?
