I'm afraid I can only provide a bit of the answer... the text describes this as an "experimental year" with the rider paced by scooter instead of the more normal Derny.

I've seen race results for the early years listing "Stage A", "Stage B", "Stage C", so at one time it was a divided event, but I don't know if that was all on the same day, or what. Anyone else have more info? Mick? Brett? Sergio?

I'll keep checking for articles from other years.
