I tried this, with precisely the setup on Sheldon's site. It provided a very good grip on the cup, and I think that, in most cases, it would work. But even with an 18" socket wrench handle, it still wasn't enough to loosen the cup of my mid-50s Olmo. The the bolt slipped, and I was afraid of gouging something, so I stopped. However, the bolt plus a little heat from a propane torch did the trick. Still took a lot of effort, but it came off.
