Hello Steven,
I think Steven has missed a few things here that I would like to clarify.
For the past few weeks I've noted from my occassional conversations with Jan that he has not been paying much attention to this list - he may in fact be off it (I'm not sure). Part of the reason I posted on the topic is that out of my own personal self interest I want folks reminded of copyright issues to protect my own interests regarding my past and potential future writing.
I can't recall any articles that he has ever reprinted in his magazine that were not from long-time-dead-people. To imply that he is appropriating other peoples efforts is both incorrect and fails to respect the great efforts he has made to the body of knowledge regarding our hobby.
Regarding Jan's "breach of contract?" - read Jan's site. He specifically states that if backissues are sold out he will extend the subscription.

\r?\n> the right thing - I hope I didn't come on too strong in my original post
\r?\n> (
\r?\n> I can do that sometimes) and I applaud his efforts to be sure that Jan

\r?\n> compensated appropriately. I mainly wanted to raise awareness of the
\r?\n> issues involved.

\r?\n> Mike,
\r?\n>
\r?\n> I am quite surprised that Jan is not speaking for himself on this whole
\r?\n> matter, or are you speaking out as a proxy for your friend? My guess is
\r?\n> that Jan is not speaking out personally mainly due to the fact that he
\r?\n> is not the author of many of the articles that appear in his rag and
\r?\n> that, to the best of my knowledge, he has not paid any of the true
\r?\n> authors for these articles. To therefore be, as you put it,
\r?\n> "compensated" for "his" copyright does seem to be completely out of
\r?\n> line. On a purely legal level, given that Jan is also in apparent breach
\r?\n> of his sales contreact with Jon, as he has not provided the complete
\r?\n> series of back issues as promised; Jon would be well within his rights
\r?\n> to seek redress on his own. If I had not already junked my copies, I
\r?\n> would have gladly photocopied them for Jon.
