Greetings, I'm new to the list and have been consistently amazed at the depth and detail of knowledge on tap here!
I'm getting a 1974 or 1975 Serotta (I showed it to him and he said he built it the second year he was frame building) ready for the road again. It is set up for a 6 speed freewheel (126 spacing).
1- Were large flange hubs more common than small flange back then? 2- What is the timeframe for introduction of 6 speed freewheels and when did they become more common than 5 speeds? 3- Do 5,6 & 7 speed rear hubs use the same hub shell with different length axles/spacers and more dishing of the rim? 4- What is the difference between the Super Record hubs (4011) and the Nuovo Record hubs (1035) listed in the 1975a catalog?
And just so you can laugh at me, the bicycle decision I made that I regret the most! In 1979 I decided it was time for a new bicycle. I was replacing my Viscount (I worked in a shop that sold them and had already replaced the death fork). I was in college at the time and narrowed the selection to a choice between a Trek frameset for $300 and a custom frame made by some guy in CT named Richard Sachs. I think he wanted about $500 for a frame. In the end, being a poor student I ended up buying the Trek as a touring frame with Columbus sp tubing. Can't win them all!
