My home town club Southport C.c. organised a pro criterium each year in the 70s/80s. A guy called Marcel who lived in Ostend, Belgium would bring a few riders over (mainly so their wives could go shopping in Marks and Sparks). One year there was a guy on an Alan, I can't recall the main sponsor but it was a second rank team. I asked Marcel how they managed riding alloy frames on the pave as virtually all the team's races were kermesses in Flanders. He said they changed the frames every six weeks! I can't say if that tale is true but I wasn't too surprised. Ray Green, Brighton, England
