Wow, Gruesome indeed. I winced when I read about the Cinelli and the hammer. What a horrible visual. However, it does help me put my whining in perspective. That gorgeous Mercian with a barber-pole paint job that my ex-wife kept...thank God that's all she did.
I knew a guy whose pregnant girlfriend destroyed all his belongings, including a few on-topic bikes, while he was out of town. One thing he salvaged and gave to me as a gift was a Merckx mini-poster. He thought of giving it to me because he said he was done with cycling after that, and because my name was Ray like his - the mini-poster is autographed by Merckx "To Ray..." He said it was one of the few things that survived untouched.
Oh the horror, the horror.

I have a short tale somewhat related. I was in the storied back room at
Matt Assenmacher's and there was a whole wall of hanging bikes...many
wonderful, but all damaged when looked at more closely. I asked Matt about
them and he told me that when someone sends him a frame and it is just too
damaged to make repair worthwhile, they never ask for it back, so he just
hangs them there. There were a couple of real heartbreakers
there...including a wonderful Cinelli that an angry soon-to-be ex-spouse had
taken a hammer to...on each bit of tubing on the bike...Gruesome!
