There's another economic factor here that hasn't been mentioned, that modern artisan makers are also competing with the past. Gordon's Rock and Road's may be competing with Surly, but his lugged frames are competing with Alf Hetchins, Les Ephgrave and Bill Hurlow too. The irony is that we love steel lugged frames partly because of their durability and ease of repair/refurbishment. What other industrial product has a lifespan measured in decades? And the rise of non-ferrous bikes has put of thousands of classic lugged frames onto the used market, those that escape the scrap heap. How many of us have a basment full of classic bikes because they have been so cheap on the used market? If those bikes weren't available, how many of us would be in line to get a new steel frame brazed up? I recall a thread on the list a few years ago where someone was surprised that Al Eisentraut wasn't enthusiastic about supporting a frame he made 30 years ago. Al probably saw this old frame as stealing away a new customer.

Can we expect the lug loving bike consumer to pony up $3,000+ for a fancy custom frame like a Gordon, when he can get a used '54 Algurn built by Stuart Purves with lovely lugs and repainted by Mike Barry for under $1,000? (an actual example from my own experience.) If you skip the paint, the used bike has it all over the custom job if your decision is based solely on economics. And the glut of used bikes means you can get 3-4 machines for the cost of one custom. Human nature being what it is, can we be surprised that demand is somewhat low? I'd say that it's not just cheap asian labor that's depressing demand for new lugged steel, it's the eternal lifespan of the old frames.

But maybe the tide is changing. Some companies and makers (Rivendell, Sachs, Slawta) certainly seem to be busy. I'm amazed that's there's not more demand for lugged Gordons, but that is perhaps a strange anomoly. If used frame prices start climbing (as they seem to be in the last few year, at least for the high prestige marques), demand should begin switching to the custom makers.

As the owner of three custom steel bikes (my old Marinonni, a Landshark tandem and a Goodrich sporty day rider) I can testify that there's nothing more fun than yakking with the builder as he is designing your machine, specifying brazeons and fittings to exactly match your beau ideale, worrying over component selection and color choice, and the agonizing ecstacy of waiting for delivery. And oh, the way they ride. Plus, if you want to try modern parts, it's certainly more fitting to put them on a frame made for them, rather than some poor old classic machine with the rear stays yanked apart to wedge in a bigger cluster. (Editor: Hmm, something freudian there. Oh well, leave it in.) I suppose the point I'm suggesting to the list is that if you have disposable income and always have a bike project going, you probably have "enough" classic machines, so why not exchange the next three or four old frame projects and get a steel frame made for you?. Heck, it doesn't even have to be one of the super expensive ones. Mercians can be had for under a grand. Jacksons aren't much more. I'm not saying it is a moral imperative that everyone must have a bespoke frame or else you aren't a real classic bike guy, but if you have disposable cash, what better buy could you make? Heck, it may even help you live longer.

I've been around the bike biz a bit, and I'm convinced that the business is totally driven by marketing. There are wonderful modern bikes out there, but for the bulk of the market, the bikes folks buy are the wrong ones. But I think it is just the opposite - traditional race bikes are designed mostly for those who are often less hard core and who ride shorter distances. The machines that Bruce Gordon, Peter Weigle, Alex Singer (and that famous Baylis guy) are building are amazingly well suited for riders that know what its like AFTER the first 50 or 100 miles of a days ride are done. What gets you on a long ride isn't a pound of weight - its the constant pounding of the miles.

Here in Colorado, so many folks train so that they can do well on the club 120 mile event rides in the mountains. Yet the race bike which only takes 23mm tires, has no bags to carry clothes for changing mountain conditions, and which has no fenders for the inevitable rain on a summer afternoon is tragically unsuitable.

So Bruce Gordon and a few other builders are making gorgeous custom machines that are ideal for the majority of riders - riders that frequently pride themselves on a quick 50, 75, or 100 mile jaunt. Each of us as an example should ride these machines and recomend them to our friends. But why don't we? Because so many of us are swept up believing the marketing. We chase the false idols of weight and perceived stiffness. A good steel frame is not much more than a waterbottle away from a Ti frame in weight. And it isn't about stiffness - its about a bike that flexes in sync with your riding style - and getting that match right is where the custom builder comes in.

When I owned Bicycle Classics inc. I rode them all - especially the modern Italian Scandium and titanium. I had a Merckx SC, a Pinarello Prince, and others - yet I am most at home, even when "sprinting", on my Weigle. Sure the modern bikes did great things - but the Weigle is so much better for nearly every type of riding I do, I can't imagine life on an alternative material.

So folks need to answer the question "what is the optimal bike for my needs" - and if you answer the question without being swayed by fads or misinformation, we should be swamping builders such as Bruce Gordon with orders for ourselves and from our friends. American custom frames are inexpensive - it is a crime that Bruce Gordon isn't complaining that he is swamped. So lets get cracking!
