The single pulley "Sport" derailleur has a spring loaded "head" --- the pivot piece that bolts to the dropout hanger, thus requiring the hole in the dropout to facilitate the torsion within the spring. If one removes the spring loaded head from this derailleur and attaches it to the body of a Gran Sport (or Nuevo Record?) derailleur, one has a derailleur that is spring loaded at both ends and takes up a lot more chain with a standard cage. This trick is brought to you by Alexander Von Tutschek (UK) who uses this modification on his personal cycles, and calls it a "chain eater".

So its hard for me to reconcile the bike being post '65, even knowing that parts is parts and builders buy in bulk I just gotta think that Cino would have used all the '60 dropouts he bought in bulk at the start of the decade. Whatever, it's been "restoved to a very high order" so for the most anal of Cinelli-o-philes, it's moot in Phelpsie's bikes case. >

The dropout with the single small hole next to the derailleur mounting hole (it's a Gran Sport dropout) is from 1951 and the introduction of the Gran Sport and Sport derailleurs.

The single pulley Sport derailleur was around for a couple of decades.
