I would agree that 1920s Cyclings with their adverts are extremely good reference material.
As to BSA, Raleigh, Hercules etc both BSA and Raleigh made large numbers of basic clubman's machines, the Lenton, BSA Gold Medal etc and very top quality BSA Opperman and Raleigh RRAs. These were used by many top time triallists and record breakers. The basic clubman's machines were used by those not fortunate enough to afford a Selbach, Evans or R O Harrison. The basic clubman's machines were not the first choice but were all that many club riders could afford. And they were used in their thousands by club cyclists who belonged to work cycle clubs, church cycle clubs etc which were not part of the mainstream cycling community.
