I've always admired Raleigh. More for their utility bikes than for their "lightweights".
Mass-produced bikes say something about national character. Compare '50s Schwinns (U.S.), with Raleighs (U.K.), Peugeots (FR), Gazelles (Holland), Phoenix(China) to see what I mean.
Anyway, I started reading a book called "Framing Production" (ISBN 0-262-18225-4). Page 36 has a 1921 Raleigh ad entitled "The Tubular Fork Crown".
It describes how that feature is 5 1/2 times stronger than "what is considered safe". I always liked that fork crown. Thought it was very clever and "cool".
